The Healing Power Of Colour: Benefits Of Colour Therapy

 Healing Power Of Colour

Shamanic Medicine comes in many forms: many of which are found in the natural world around us.

Today, I want to discuss a beautiful medicine; a medicine that many of us partake in unconsciously and take for granted. It is a medicine that is all around us.

It is that of colour.

Although we may think of this as a visual medicine, taken through our sense of sight, it also works on another level too. color therapy

Let us explore about  what is colour therapy.

Complementary Therapy

Colour therapy is a real therapy… almost.

Although many may consider using colour in therapy as a “woo-woo” concept, it is not.

Colour therapy is recognized as a complementary therapy, otherwise known as alternative medicine, although the scientific debate is still deciding if it is effective.

What is colour therapy?

Colour therapy, otherwise known as chromotherapy, uses the visible spectrum of colour and light to heal.

It also delves into the unique frequency and vibration of a specific colour to help us find energetic healing.

It is a holistic therapy that focuses on body, mind and soul.

How does colour therapy work?

When we experience “dis-ease” on any level, whether it may be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual, at its’ core, there is something that is not aligning or not in balance.

Colour therapy helps to identify where this is coming from.

When there is a depletion, colour is added to bring alignment.

When there is an excess, an opposite colour is added, to bring decrease the energy.

In this way, colour therapy helps to find a deep sense of balance, realignment,  and healing.

This is a simple explanation of how does colour therapy work.

Ancient Healing Practice

It is a sacred and revered practice. They believed in this healing power.

The ancient Egyptians thought it was worthy of being called a therapeutic.

They created colour therapy rooms. These rooms were filled with coloured glass, where the sun shone through, and people were able to absorb the healing energies.

In the  Indian culture, they use colour too.  There is an association between each chakra and a specific colour:

  • Red: Root chakra
  • Orange: Sacral Chakra
  • Yellow: Solar Plexus
  • Green: Heart Chakra
  • Blue: Throat Chakra
  • Indigo: Third Eye Chakra
  • Violet: Crown Chakra

Benefits

Colour therapy, as mentioned before, works on a mind, body and soul level.

Because it also works on an energy level, its applications are endless.

In my practice with clients, some of the more common applications are:

  • Depression, Anxiety, nerves and Stress
  • Appetite suppression and weight loss
  • General Body tonic
  • Insomnia
  • Skin
  • Chakra balancing
  • Aura balancing

The benefits of colour therapy are endless

Colour Therapy Techniques

Colour therapy can be used in a variety of ways but here are two main ones.

The first is a visual component.

Have you ever just walked into a room and those colours give you a certain feeling?

Or focus on branding: what emotions does your favourite brand evoke in you?

Have you ever wanted to dye your hair a crazy colour?

Or when shopping you are drawn to certain colour?

This is the visual aspect of colour in play and how you are subconsciously drawn to bring certain colours into your space to help you find healing and balance.

Yes, physical healing happens but also notice in these scenarios how those colours shift our emotions too.

The other aspect is using colour on a more energetic level such as using colour glass as the Egyptians did. By reflecting the life force and energy of  a certain colour on the body you can bring balance and healing.

Colours and Their Meanings

Each colour has its own vibration. I will explore a bit of what it means to be in a specific colour frequency.  Let us look at the colours and their meanings.

Red

Red is about energy. It is an extremely vital colour that promotes vitality,  liveliness and passion.

When in the red energy, one is strong and physically active. It’s about being outgoing and embracing life.

An imbalance of this energy could be seen in feeling depleted, feeling aggression and “attacking” life head one without any patience.

Orange

Orange energy is still quite vital but also less physical and more practical. As a result, these people often make good and steady decisions. This energy brings joy and cheerfulness.

An imbalance in this chakra can mean unstable emotions or an addiction.

Yellow

Yellow is about shining, like the sun. There is an intellect and a curiosity about exploring life from a mental or logical way.

A balance may be needed here when the intellect is placed above all else, and the body becomes neglected as a result.

Green

Green is about finding a balance and harmony with life. Green energy loves nature. Often there is a pull in working in the healing arts.

Balance may be needed when there is difficulty in making a decision as emotions often get in the way. Or aspects around the heart: insecurity and jealousy may arise.

Blue

Blue is soft and peaceful. These people are passive, more introverted and like being in a space that is harmonious. There is a wisdom in understanding people.

Balance may be needed if there is a withdrawal from society that can lead to depression, from being too isolated and in ones’ own head too much. There may also be an imbalance if communication is difficult and a lack of self-expression.

Indigo

There is a strong connection to spirituality and intuition. There is a direct line to the higher self.  These people love creativity. They are idealistic, truthful and loyal.

Balance may be needed when they abuse their power.

Violet

Violet is for sensitive people. These are the artists and the creatives. These people often have a strong connection to spirit, even if they are not aware of it, often more so than they do have with the physical world.

They may need balance when there are mental or nervous conditions as they move too much into creativity without the grounding.

Colour Healing

Colour healing is a fascinating and beautiful healing technique, one we often overlook.

I encourage you: SEE the colours around you. Notice which colours you are drawn. Be aware of the colours you bring in your space.

Use the colour explanation as a tool to deepen your understanding and connection to yourself and your spiritual path through the healing power of colour.
